World Soil day on 5th December celebrates the importance of soil as a critical component of the natural system and as a vital contributor to the human commonwealth through its contribution to food, water and energy security and as a mitigator of biodiversity loss and climate change. It is celebrated particularly by the global community of 60,000 soil scientists charged with responsibility of generating and communicating soil knowledge for the common good.
Many events are being held, focussing on increasing the public awareness of soil and its contribution to humanity and the environment. For example “Managing Living Soils” is a 3 day conference starting today at the FAO headquarters in Rome and our own professional body the British Society of Soil Science is tomorrow co-sponsoring the All Party Political Group on AgroEcology meeting "Boosting Britain's Soils to Meet Farming Needs".
With soil protection at the heart of much of LRA’s consultancy and research support, we wholeheartedly support the annual initiative.
